How to Download a Facebook Video from an fb.watch Link
If someone shares a Facebook video on WhatsApp, the link often looks like https://fb.watch/AbCdEf123/ instead of a long facebook.com address. Here is what that link is and how to save the video behind it.
What fb.watch is
fb.watch is Facebook’s own URL shortener. It does not host videos. When you open the link, Facebook redirects you to the full video page, for example facebook.com/watch/?v=… or facebook.com/reel/…. A downloader has to follow that redirect first, which VidMate does automatically.
Steps
Android
- Long-press the fb.watch link in WhatsApp or Messenger and tap Copy.
- Open VidMate in Chrome and paste the link into the box.
- Tap Download, then Download HD.
- Find the video in Files › Downloads or in your Gallery.
iPhone
- Copy the link.
- Open VidMate in Safari, paste and tap Download.
- Tap Download HD and confirm.
- Go to Files › Downloads, open the video and tap Share › Save Video.
Windows or Mac
Paste the link in the box on the VidMate home page or the Facebook downloader page. The file lands in your Downloads folder.
Why an fb.watch link sometimes fails
An fb.watch link can point to anything on Facebook, including content that isn’t public:
| Where the link leads | Downloadable? |
|---|---|
| Public page or profile video | Yes |
| Public Reel | Yes |
| Public group video | Yes |
| Private group or friends-only video | No |
| Story | No |
The quickest test: open the link in a private browser window. If Facebook asks you to log in before showing the video, it isn’t public.
No sound in the MP3?
Some Facebook Reels are uploaded without an audio track, or Facebook removed the music. VidMate tells you when there is no sound instead of saving an empty MP3.
